Monday 2nd April comments: Today brought a noticeable change on the Farnes as vast numbers of Puffins returned to the island 'tops' whilst Guillemots were back on the clifftops. Sandwich Tern numbers continue to increase (now over 150) whilst other seabirds started to return to the cliff ledges. However its not just the birds which have changed, as the weather is shifting too...

Following the glorious week we've just experienced (sun burnt in late March!), we are now heading for a shock. Why? The shipping forecast revealed all:

Wind: Easterly 4-5 increasing north-easterly 7-8 occasionally gale force 9.

Sea state: rough.

Weather: Rain or snow, then snow showers.

That's that then. The wind has already started to increase and the temperatures are plummeting as I'm certain tomorrow will remind us that spring hasn't sprung just yet and winter is having its final say. It's time to hold on to your hats, the Farnes are going into lock-down. Welcome back to planet Farnes.

Today's Highlights: Sandwich Tern 166, Goldeneye 2, Red-breasted Merganser 2, Great Skua 1N Staple Sound (first of the year), Black Redstart singing male, Chiffchaff, Brambling, Greenfinch and Lesser Redpoll.
