A bridge too far?

An artist impression of the new bridge

Today plans were unveiled to make the Farne Islands more accessible to the masses. Following last seasons poor weather, which affected the number of sailing days, it has been decided to construct a bridge from the nearest mainland point at Bamburgh.

The roadbridge will span Inner Sound, covering the one mile of open sea before reaching Inner Farne where a new all weather car-park will be constructed. The plans, unveiled by construction company Dan & Io Ltd, will take two years to complete costing in the region of £28million pounds.

Head Ranger David Steel said “we are delighted these plans are moving forward as the bridge will offer some breath taking views and a great driving experience. To be able to drive one mile over Inner Sound and then watch Puffins from the car window will be magical. Driving will never be the same.” Construction is due to commence in May 2013.
